5 Essentials to Jot Down for Your Dog’s Care

What are 5 Essentials to Jot Down for Your Dog’s Care?

  1. Walking
  2. Feeding
  3. Medications
  4. Behaviour
  5. Emergency Contacts

Each of these 5 essential dog care points deserve a full write up of its' own. Read on to find out just how important these instructions are for someone jumping in to your position of caring for your dog.

Walkies!

The highlight of their day and essential for going to the toilet, not to mention exercise and enrichment. Have you ever been late walking your dog and they sit there staring at you? That's their body clock. They know exactly what time walk time is. This kind of routine helps them understand us and keeps them happy.

You might have certain leads for each dog, not to mention what harness or head collar they should wear. Consider Meg K9's embroidery service to get your dog's kit identifiable.

Feeding

Another time of the day your dog just knows! Try being a few minutes late and feel the wrath of their stare! It's really important to keep feed times as near to the same time as possible.

What they eat is also important. Some dogs would become really ill if they weren't given the right food. I have two dogs on a special diet, if you were to give them the wrong food they would be really poorly and it would end up being a costly visit to the vet.

The amount they should eat is a really important factor too. Imagine asking someone to feed your dog. Unless they were experienced, they wouldn't have a clue what the correct amount would be. Getting the amount of food correct is important to your dog's health.

Feed time is not something everyone knows about in relation to health. You should never feed a dog before being exercised, nor too close to the end of their walk. There is a condition called GDV or bloat, which can be fatal in dogs. Drinking too much water too quickly can also kill a deep chested dog.

Behaviour

If you are wondering why I have added behaviour as something to note, then you've probably never owned more than one dog, never mind a household with multiple dogs.

A change of carer changes your pack dynamics, even with one dog, the person caring for them can change your dog's behaviour. They respond to different people in different ways. The energy and control one person has over your dog cannot always be replicated.

In my case, the reason why behaviour is something to be noted is this. I do not allow all of my dogs to rush out of the door at the same time at walk time. It is a recipe for disaster and has been on more than one occasion, the last time the pre-walk arousal and an uncontrolled exit happened, it cost me almost £900 with one dog having to be stitched up because of a fight.

Emergency Contacts

Emergency contacts for your pets are those people we can rely on to jump in at the drop of a hat to help out. They are people who know your animals and worst case scenario, a professional who is used to caring for other peoples pets.

This is where My Dog's I.C.E.™ is designed to take the pressure off. All the essentials are logged by the animals owner; the things they class as important in the event of their absence.

So plan ahead, get your self an emergency pet planner and take the pressure off life in a crisis.
